How to convert MGRS to lat long

1. Enter a complete MGRS grid. Paste a WGS84 grid such as 18S UJ 23478 06483. Keep the zone, latitude band and two square letters. Spaces are optional.
2. Select Convert or press Enter, then read the Lat/Lon result in decimal degrees: latitude first, longitude second.
3. Copy the result. Select the Lat/Lon result to copy it. The coordinate represents the center of the MGRS square, not an improved position fix.

Worked example: 18S UJ 23478 06483 returns 38.889502, -77.035295. A shorter grid represents a larger square; the returned center cannot recover a more precise original position.

How to convert lat long to MGRS

Enter WGS84 latitude first, longitude second, using a comma or space between them. Use a decimal point and negative values for south or west. For example, 38.8895, -77.0353 is in Washington, DC. Select Convert to get:

• MGRS: 18S UJ 23478 06483
• UTM: 18S 323478E 4306483N
• DMS: 38° 53' 22.2" N, 77° 2' 7.1" W

MGRS output uses five easting and five northing digits, identifying a one-meter square. Those extra digits do not improve GPS accuracy. Rounded UTM or DMS output can return a slightly different final MGRS digit if converted again.

UTM to MGRS and latitude/longitude

Enter the zone, latitude band, easting and northing in meters, such as 18S 323478 4306483. E/N suffixes are optional. This example returns 38.889498, -77.035301.

In this converter, 18S means zone 18, latitude band S in the northern hemisphere. It does not mean zone 18 south. Bands C–M are southern; N–X are northern, with I and O omitted. If your source uses an N/S hemisphere flag, confirm its latitude band before entering it here.

Supported formats, precision and limits

• MGRS: include a zone from 1 to 60, latitude band, two square letters, and 4, 6, 8 or 10 numeric digits split equally between easting and northing. This tool does not accept two-digit grids or a square ID alone. Read the grid-precision guide.
• Coverage: MGRS and UTM conversion covers 80°S to 84°N. Polar UPS grids are not supported. Valid decimal coordinates outside that range still produce lat/long and DMS, while MGRS/UTM show OUT OF RANGE.
• Decimal degrees: latitude −90 to 90, longitude −180 to 180. Enter latitude first.
• DMS: use degrees, minutes, seconds and direction letters, such as 38°53'22.2"N, 77°2'7.1"W.
• FixPhrase: enter a supported word-based location code with spaces or hyphens between its words.
• Datum: calculations use WGS84. This tool does not transform older map datums into WGS84. Check the source datum before using a result.

Within UTM coverage, MGRS encodes the location using a zone, a lettered 100 km square and paired easting/northing digits. Polar MGRS uses UPS; this web converter covers UTM latitudes.

How accurate is the conversion?

The result depends on the input coordinate and datum. A 10-digit MGRS result identifies a one-meter square; it does not establish one-meter GPS accuracy or survey certification. When converting an MGRS square to latitude/longitude, the result represents its center.

Can I convert MGRS to lat long and UTM?

Yes. Enter a complete WGS84 MGRS grid with 4, 6, 8 or 10 numeric digits, split equally between easting and northing. The result includes latitude/longitude, UTM and DMS for the square center. This converter supports UTM latitudes from 80 degrees south to 84 degrees north, not polar UPS grids.
