01 / PURPOSE

Why Red Grid Exists

Red Grid MGRS brings grid coordinates, waypoint direction and field calculations together for people practising and using land navigation. The core navigator works without a Red Grid account or cellular service, provided the phone has a usable satellite fix.

The free app includes 10-digit MGRS, one active waypoint, four tools and three report templates. Pro adds saved waypoint lists, route cards, more tools and optional team features over compatible Meshtastic radios. Those radios are separate hardware; Red Grid MGRS does not link phones directly for team awareness.

Grid resolution describes the coordinate format. Actual position accuracy depends on the receiver and conditions; Red Grid does not claim the performance or certification of a military GPS receiver.

02 / PUBLIC SOURCE & THE APP

Public Source. A Ready-to-Use App.

We publish the source so you can inspect how Red Grid works, report issues and build it for personal use under the license. The free store app makes core MGRS navigation accessible without developer tools. Optional Pro adds field capabilities and helps fund development, testing and maintenance.

Publishing the code gives you a way to examine coordinate conversion, storage and radio behaviour, and to contribute fixes. Installing from the store gives you a straightforward app without setting up a development environment.

The repository is source available under MIT with Commons Clause. The license permits personal use and personal builds, and places restrictions on commercial use and reuse. 03 / DATA & SHARING

Local Navigation, Deliberate Sharing

Coordinates and navigation calculations run on your phone. Saved waypoint lists and settings are stored locally. Report drafts are temporary until copied. You can export files and choose radio sharing; online maps and purchases contact their providers.

The app includes no advertising or third-party tracking SDK. The public code documents team-packet encryption and its limits, including radio metadata and local key storage. Publishing code is an invitation to inspect it, not a claim of independent security certification.
