Match the Tool to the Task

If you need to read an MGRS grid, set a waypoint and work through navigation calculations, Red Grid MGRS offers a focused app on iPhone and Android. Core navigation needs no Red Grid account.

ATAK is a broader geospatial and team-awareness platform. Its official listing includes offline and online maps, overlays, shared locations, video and extensibility. Offline mapping is not unique to Red Grid. See the official ATAK-CIV feature list for its current capabilities.

Red Grid is not a TAK client. If your organization requires TAK-server connectivity, CoT exchange or ATAK plugins, the current Red Grid release does not satisfy that requirement.

What Red Grid Covers

MGRS and Waypoint Navigation

Free 10-digit MGRS, one active waypoint with bearing and distance, back azimuth, pace count and magnetic declination. Dead reckoning and resection are Pro tools.

Route Preparation

Pro provides up to 10 lists with 20 points each, route cards and GPX/KML exchange. Maps depend on prepared data; verify coverage before leaving service.

Optional Radio Team Features

Pro plus compatible Meshtastic radios adds team positions and short messages. Radios are separate hardware and require configuration. Solo navigation needs no radio.

Questions Before You Choose

Is Red Grid MGRS a full ATAK replacement?

No. Red Grid focuses on MGRS land navigation and optional Meshtastic team features. It does not currently connect to a TAK server, provide CoT interoperability or run ATAK plugins. Choose based on the workflow and integrations your team requires.

Does Red Grid MGRS run on iPhone and Android?

Yes. Check each store listing for device compatibility and regional pricing. Features that use a compass, barometer, camera or radio depend on compatible hardware and permissions.

What is required for team positions without cell service?

Pro and compatible Meshtastic radios purchased separately. Each phone pairs with its radio over Bluetooth; radio traffic uses LoRa. Configure the radios and team key, and verify communication before field use. Range and delivery depend on terrain and equipment.

What is free and what needs Pro?

10-digit MGRS, one active waypoint with bearing and distance, four tools and three report templates are free. Pro adds all 12 tools, all six templates, saved lists and route cards, and optional radio team features. US reference pricing is $3.99/month or $49.99 once for lifetime; local store prices may differ.
